Characters (Spoilers)
The Bishop
The Bishop was introduced early in the book at a church, he was the man whom gave Jean Valjean a place to stay for the night and gave him food as well but he did much more then provide him dinner and a place to sleep. The Bishop bestowed Jean Valjean the gift of redemption and enlightened him thus changing Jean Valjean for the the rest of the story. Before Jean Valjean leaves the church the Bishop gives him a candle stick holder that becomes a symbol of redemption later in the book.
Jean valjean
Jean Valjean is an ex-convict that spent nine-teen years in the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread for his "family" that desperately needed food. Before getting arrested Jean Valjean was a pruner and used most if not all the money he earned for his "family" of seven boys. Jean Valjean constantly tried to run from the galleys and that was how he accumulated so many years in the galleys because every time he tried to run he was caught and more years was added to his sentence in the galleys. After Jean Valjeanhad finished his time in the galleys he left out and started his great journey of redemption.
Fantine
Fantine is a young woman whom plays a giant part within this story. Fantine Has a little girl named Cosette whom she left behind with a Thenardiers so she can work in a neighboring town. Fantine had made a agreement with the Thenardiers that she wold pay monthly to watch Cosette and take care of her. Fantine had to do alot of self sacrificing because she looses her job and has to pay the Thenardiers so she gives up her hair, teeth and starts to prostitute herself to get the money needed for Cosette. Fantine gets brought into the police office for getting into a fight in the streets and that is where she meets Jean Valjean.
javert
Javert is a inspector that helps Mayor run the police force. From the beginning Javert has suspected that the mayor was Jean Valjean and he was correct. Throughout the story Javert is on the case to find Jean Valjean and bring him in for his wrong doing. Javert is kind of crazy and is willing to go far just to find his primary target, Jean Valjean.
Cosette
Cosette is Fantine's daughter that she left behind with the Thenardiers because she needed to leave to a neighboring town for work. She plays a major part within the story because Jean Valjean finds her and takes her in as one of his owns. As the story progresses she grows up into a beautiful girl that is constantly being followed by a young man. Cossete and Jean Valjean are constantly on the run from Javert.
